In this guide, we’ve listed the accepted addiction insurance to help you easily identify whether your insurance provider is among those who support your journey to recovery.

1. Aetna
Known for its extensive network of healthcare providers, Aetna is one of the largest and most well-established health insurance companies in the United States.
Over its long history, it has adapted to the evolving needs of individuals and organizations. In contrast to its earlier years when coverage for addiction-related services was limited, Aetna’s policies now include coverage for various addiction treatment and mental health services.

2. Blue Cross
Our Recreate Behavioral Health Network treatment facilities cover most Blue Cross insurances, including Anthem, Blue Shield, CareFirst, Horizon, and more.
Anthem Blue Cross BlueShield
Anthem is the largest for-profit healthcare company in the BlueCross and BlueShield Association. It covers addiction treatment services like detox, rehab, and behavioral therapy. It may also provide coverage for prescription drugs during detox or aftercare services.
Blue Cross BlueShield
Blue Cross BlueShield (BCBS) comprises 34 independent insurers, offering three types of health plans and four metal tiers on the Affordable Care Act marketplace.
It has an NCQA (National Committee for Quality Assurance) rating of 4.5 out of 5, placing it among the country’s top 10% of commercial health plans. It covers costs associated with outpatient treatment, residential treatment, detox, and partial hospitalization.
Empire Blue Cross BlueShield
Empire is one of the biggest healthcare insurance companies in New York, with a network including more than 90,000 participating doctors and over 160 hospitals.
The company offers Medicare plans, Medicaid plans, family plans, and small business plans for employers, and covers drug rehab and detoxification for individuals struggling with addiction.
CareFirst Blue Cross BlueShield
Operating in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, CareFirst Blue Cross BlueShield is a not-for-profit health services company that offers coverage in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia.
Specific plans and coverage options differ based on the state and region, but most come with services related to behavioral health care. This includes detoxification, inpatient treatment, therapy, and varying levels of outpatient care.
Horizon Blue Cross BlueShield
Horizon BCBS is a health insurance provider that primarily operates in New Jersey. It offers a variety of health insurance plans, including individual and family plans, employer-sponsored group plans, Medicare Advantage plans, and Medicaid plans.
Some of these plans cover a range of addiction services, which include, but are not limited to, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, medication-assisted treatment, and counseling.
Independence Blue Cross
Independence Blue Cross (IBX) is a major insurance company that operates in Philadelphia and southeastern Pennsylvania. It covers mental health and drug and alcohol addiction treatment services listed under the Affordable Care Act, including:
- Medication-Assisted Treatment
- Inpatient/Residential Rehab
- Outpatient Treatment
- Intensive Outpatient
- Partial Hospitalization Programs
3. Carelon Behavioral Health (formerly Beacon Health Options)
Carelon Behavioral Health, which used to operate under the name Beacon Health Options, is a behavioral health company under the Anthem name. Established in 1991, it specializes in mental and emotional well-being and recovery.
Carelon insurance covers most types of addictions, including:
- Alcohol
- Prescription opioids
- Methamphetamine
- Benzodiazepines
- Heroin
- Cocaine
Depending on the program chosen, Carelon may cover residential and inpatient rehab, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient.
4. BrightHealth
BrightHealth is a value-driven healthcare company based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It operates in more than 50 markets in 13 states and offers both virtual and in-person care to more than 200,000 patients.
While it primarily focuses on healthcare services, the company is also dedicated to providing accessible and affordable behavioral health services to people struggling with substance abuse.
Among others, the insurance covers costs related to drug and alcohol rehab and intensive outpatient treatment.
5. Trustmark Health Benefits (formerly CoreSource)
Trustmark, formerly CoreSource, offers coverage for addiction treatment services as part of its behavioral health benefits.
Like most insurances, the extent of the coverage may vary depending on the policy type and individual plan.
Generally, though, Trustmark provides coverage for both alcohol rehab treatment and inpatient and outpatient drug programs.
Inpatient and outpatient coverage includes individual group therapy, counseling, medical care, and medication management.
6. New York State Health Insurance Program
Protecting over 1.2 million state and local government employees, families, and retirees, the New York State Health Insurance Program (NYSHIP) is undoubtedly one of the largest employer-sponsored group health insurance in the US.
It covers treatment for mental health and substance use disorders under its behavioral health care plan. Based on your coverage, NYSHIP rehab services may include:
- Medical Detox and Withdrawal Management
- Residential Rehab
- Outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Rehab
- Partial-Hospitalization Programs
- Medication-Assisted Treatment
- Occupational Therapies (CBT, DBT, etc.)

7. Magellan Health
Established in 1969 as a psychiatric hospital chain under the name Charter Medical, Magellan Health is a well-known insurance provider that specializes in behavioral healthcare, including substance abuse.
The company maintains a network of more than 77,000 mental health partners—most of which are drug and alcohol rehab treatment centers. It currently serves over 33 million patients across 250+ worldwide locations.
Magellan Health covers numerous treatment programs related to substance abuse, including:
- Employee Assistance Programs
- Employer Assistance Programs
- Integrated Behavioral Health Programs
- Early Detection Programs
The company also covers services specializing in drug addiction in children, including counseling, therapy, and other evidence-based interventions.
8. GEHA
GEHA (Government Employees Health Association) is a not-for-profit insurance company that serves federal employees, military retirees, and their families. It currently serves more than 2 million people worldwide.
GEHA covers the following treatment programs:
- Medical Detox
- Inpatient and Outpatient Programs
- Intensive Outpatient Programs
- Partial Hospitalization Programs
- Aftercare (support groups, therapy, community programs, etc.)
9. Humana
Humana is the largest health insurance provider in Louisville and the fourth largest in the US.
It covers a number of inpatient and outpatient drug and alcohol rehab services, as well as detoxification services, medication-assisted treatment programs, and individual, group, and family counseling sessions.
It likewise covers dual diagnosis treatment, which involves addressing co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders through medical management, therapy, and other evidence-based interventions.
10. Medical Mutual
Medical Mutual is the oldest and largest health insurance in Cleveland, Ohio, serving more than 1.6 million customers.
Depending on your plan, Medical Mutual may cover or at least part of the cost of detox, inpatient rehab, outpatient rehab, and medical-assisted treatment.
Dual diagnosis treatment, such as depression alongside addiction, also falls under the insurance’s mental and behavioral health services.
11. Meritain Health
Meritain Health is a subsidiary of Aetna, a major health insurance company we covered earlier in this post. It specializes in providing administrative services for self-funded health plans, including those related to employer-sponsored health insurance.
Like Aetna, it covers behavioral health services, which include addiction treatment for major substance disorders. This includes alcohol, heroin, methamphetamine, opioids, ADHD medications, and other prescription drugs.
Some plans provide full coverage for inpatient and residential treatment, but most require you to meet a deductible and pay either a coinsurance or copay.
12. Molina Healthcare
Molina Healthcare is a managed care company that provides health insurance plans to individuals and families eligible for government-sponsored programs, including those with Medicaid and Medicare.
Though based in California, it operates in multiple areas across the United States. It covers mental health and drug and alcohol treatment services, including drug detox, inpatient and outpatient rehab, and mental health therapies.
13. TRICARE
TRICARE is a healthcare program established by the United States Department of Defense. It provides essential health benefits to National Guard and Reserve members, active-duty service members, retirees, and survivors.
The company offers a variety of health plans, including TRICARE Prime, TRICARE Select, TRICARE for Life, TRICARE Reserve Select, and TRICARE Retired Reserve, each with its own features and coverage options.
Most of these plans cover drug and alcohol detox, inpatient and outpatient rehab, and many forms of psychotherapy, such as counseling and one-on-one therapy sessions.
